Sedation Dentistry
Most children can receive treatment in the typical office setting. However, some patients may benefit from dental treatment performed while under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Dr. Purvis has privileges at Children's Hospital of Alabama and at Children's South and is trained and experienced in accomplishing dental treatment on patients under general anesthesia.
Sometimes this is necessary when the child is very young and has a large amount of treatment. We also use general anesthesia for older patients who have a hard time cooperating in the normal dental setting. Careful consideration is given to determine when this is appropriate. Often, treatment is first attempted in an office setting with or without sedative medications. However, if there is a lot of work to be done, the hospital is often the best way to safely accomplish treatment.
